i am thinking of sprinting and hillclimbing my jem but need info/help on a couple of things including roll over bar and class it would be eligible, i would keep the modified 998 cooper lump for the meantime. Has any member any advice on roll cages, ive looked into it and i can find no one that makes one for the jem or indeed the marcos, could i make my own ? how easy ? anyone have drawings for one, any advice would be appriciate. |

Hi Allan,
I have a Mini Marcos that I Sprinted and Hillclimbed and am currently modifying to use for tarmac Rallying. Due to the Mini Marcos being FIA homologated and the numbers produced it can run in the Modified production class, but I am not sure about the Mini Jem. There has been Jems sprinted before but I am not sure on the class. Rollcenter and Marcos Heritage (Caged) do a roll cage for the Mini Marcos and I am sure that any of the rollcage manufactures will custom make a cage for the Jem. Or if you are good with a tube bender and a mig welder you could make one yourself. I would recommend you speak to a local MSA Scrutineer to get advise on how to fit it. Where are you thinking of competing? Where are you? You are welcome to have a look at my car. I am near Billingshurst, West Sussex.

For my car, I plan to go to a local roll cage fabricator to make mine. The prices, at least here, are actually lower than a premade one, after considering transport of the cage, and final installation of the pre bent tubes.
As for welding a cage, it's important to get good welds that are solid, without being able to inspect the inside -- so make sure that whoever is welding the cage is a very competent welder. You don't want those welds breaking under stress.
As for classing the car, at least here, my mk6 mini marcos won't be classed as anything classic. For scca, I'm hoping to class as f street modified, which requires the car to be street legal. I would be up against much newer cars with similar (1.3L) engine sizes, so I won't be competitive on most courses. I'm just going for fun, not prizes, so I'm not worried about who I'm racing against (it's not wheel to wheel). |

Allan (Brown)
Great to hear that I'm finally going to be joined by another marcos rallying in the UK.
Are you going historic or just general? If general I'd be interested to know how are you getting round the minimum weight issue. I had quite a lot of correspondance with the MSA before it was brought in, without any real result. In the end it wasn't an issue to me because they decided to exempt cars with existing MSA rally log books, but I had thought I might be able to claim it as a '2WD specialist rally car' as the min 620kg is fairly close the the actual weight of my car with all the safety gear. But I did think I might have a fight on my hands. To add ballast to the standard min of 840kg I certainly considered would be unsafe. I presume though for historic there are no minimum weight limits.
Hope it all goes OK no matter what way you do it. |

Hi Jim, I have spoken to the MSA technical advisor and he said as the Mini Marcos is homologated there should be no reason why it can't be log booked as a rally car. I have also spoken to a couple of Scrutineers and they are happy to log book my car when it is finished. I am not planning to run in historic so hopefully it will be ok. I still have a lot of work to do to the car and I am just about to move house. So it might be a while before I am out competing in it. |
