Nice clip there Tom! And weren't the cars more interesting to look at then? Not all aerodymanic aids and wings! As for the Le Mans MM, does anyone have any specs on the car? Spec of the engine, final drive, wheel/tyre sizes etc? |

The 66 car ran an "off the shelf" 1293cc works customer spec rally prepared engine.
There are some great articles about the 66 race and the car in the main section of the MMOC website . |

That's good going, but I wonder what it was revving to? What final drives were available in 66?
220kmh - whats that in real money? 135mph? |

| I think the '67 car was clocked at 141mph on the Mulsanne straight. I doubt if the engines would be revved above 6,500 for an endurance race in 1966, so that would imply a fairly tall final drive, possibly 2.9:1. The '67 engine would have been a full race engine, which broke because the oil pump drive pin sheared off. |

| My understanding was that they put the largest crownwhhell they could fit in the housing. Would that mean that it was less than 2.9:1? |

2.9:1 that would app be 19 mph per 1000 revs
If 6500 revs x 19 = ~123 mp/h top

| I asked the current owner of the 67 car and he has confirmed that it had a 2.9 final drive for le Mans.. |

19mph per 1000rpm. By my maths that would require 7400ish rpm to hit 141mph. I'm guessing it would be an all steel bottom end very carefully put together to last 24hrs! (On a better note, the MPi does approx 22mph per 1000rpm, so I'd 'only' have to hit 6500rpm on the autobahn to do 140mph! ) Were there any mechanical changes for the 67 car? |

I only just noticed this. Of course you meant the largest pinion. You can get a 2.7:1 final drive into a Mini gearbox but with some machining to provide enough clearance for the pinion.
Btw it's well worth subscribing to the Maximum Mini mailing list which you can do via ether of the blogspot links above. |
