As suggested I have started a new thread for the Jem, to post the restoration progress.
Not a lot to say at the moment as we have just started to make space and gather all the parts out of storage. Below are the photos of how it stands today: The shell
Someone in the past thought it was necessary to cut and remove the top half of the dash, this posed a great worry until yesterday as we did not have a dash to make a mould off. As you can see in the car the attempt to emulate the dash top... I think one of my mum's flower pots gave it life to the cause.
And some parts we have refurbished:
Body work repairs are starting this week. Need to repair the nose section.we have a close friend who is a glass/carbon expert, he will be repairing all the cracks and crazing. |

Bit more work carried out over the Chirstmas period. Not as much as we would of liked, but the tempreture and weather play big part of that.
Trail fitting the roll cage. Needs a few more adjustments and amendments but it is nearly ready.

And a little hint into the route I have decided to go with regarding engine choice:

I do too. there is a long annoying story with these now. The seller has had changed his mind. We agreed a price. I bid and he was going to end the auction with my high bid as it met reserve. It appears he has more interest and is not honoring our agreement. Frustrating. I will be bidding though. I WILL win them as a matter of principle. |

No unfortunatley I missed out on those lurvely wheels. Not too disheartend I have purchased a set of 10" image split rims. I always wanted to stay with a 10" setup if possible. More photos when they arrive.

An interesting email from possiblly the previous owner of this Jem.
Hello. Sorry to sound like a stalker but I noticed your thread on Minijem & recognise my old mk2 Jem (the red/yellow etc. one) I have always regretted selling & wondered what happened to it It was registered MCY30G when I bought it but previously was 625DCY (plate apparently sold to a 'David Charles Young') I had it in 1989 & sold it as a rolling shell in 1991 ish to someone from Southampton area, I lived in Swansea (as did at least 2 previous owners) at the time & if I remember it was collected with a trailer towed behind a white Capri chassis number was 'MRMSF1002' & was a Fellpoint car, had a rear roll cage, spax coil over & chopped rear beam, fully adjustable rose-jointed front suspension, the bulkhead was 'boxed' to accept a side-draught weber carb & previously someone had fitted a glass sunroof. the interior was a classy 1970's custom as it was FUR lined! & the dash was padded vinyl with triumph 2000 gauges & a smiths 8k rev counter there was a battery cut-off switch fitted to the rear panel (along with huge SIMCA rear light units), it had an opening rear hatch & if I remember opening rear side windows. the wheel arches were widened at the front (both l&r lower extensions had been snapped off by a previous owner when he drove between 2 bollards) & there was a moulded rear spoiler as part of the cars bodywork when I had it 12" imp type banded wheels were fitted with goodyear ultragrip tyres (not road tyres & especially not for wet tar!) with 8.5" disc setup but I fitted 'S' type 7.5" discs to drop to 10" wheels the engine was an 1100cc from a morris saloon as the previous owner killed the 1275 (although another previous owner said it was nearer 1400) at sometime it had been a rally car (hence the thicker fibreglass, cage, suspension & odd filler where lights (spotlights & above pass door on roof a 'marshals light') & cut-off switches were) although I have never researched any history
I have photo's somewhere of when I bought it & when it was yellow with a previous owner (early '80's
Rich.
PS. I did not remove the dash or bulkhead.
Can anyone in the club identify the chassis number he mentions?
Thanks |
