I am building up MM Mk4 chassis 8074 and I have refurbished all the suspension and subframes and they are assembled ready to fit to the car. The engine and gearbox have been stripped ready for machining/ rebuild but this may take some time as the company who are doing the machining are quoting a few months lead time. This has prompted a couple of questions:
1) I could fit the subframes to the body now and fit the engine later. Is there any advantage doing this versus installing the engine in the subframe first and then putting the complete unit into the car?
2) I don't yet have an exhaust manifold. I know that the manifold can end up very tight to the body so are there any manifolds that I should avoid or ones that fit better than others. I am looking to fit a slightly upgraded manifold over standard
I am also looking to source a rear roll bar to fit into the body. Does any company offer these for the Mk4 or is it a case of getting them custom made to fit an individual car?

Yes you can fit the engine throught he top but it is tight and you'll need to remove the clutch cover.
The last Marcos I had I used a maniflow lcb and I don't recall any problems.
Rollcentre used to do a kit for the MK4 but that was a long time ago. Owens fabrication have done a couple of cages now for mini Marcos, so give them a try.

Yes, it's easier to mount the engine on the subframe then drop the body on to it. You need to put packing pieces between the tails of the subframes and the floor pan. I've put a piece of galvanised wirebetween the back subframe bolts to catch the down pipe when it comes off (as it does).
I have a Maniflow big bore exhaust system on my Mk.IV. I've used various manifolds in the past, with RC40 2-can silencers.
I recall thst Caged made roll cages for the Marcos Heritage Mk. VI which has basically the same internal dimensions.
