Mini Clubman SRV4, 1974

One of five Safety Research Vehicles produced under a joint project between British Leyland and the Transport and Road Research Laboratory. The car has a strengthened passenger cell to withstand a high speed impact, impact resistant low mounted bumpers, a padded interior and a sloping bonnet to minimise injury to pedestrians. The Clubman has a longer wheelbase to allow the engine to be moved forward for better energy absorbtion in the event of a front end collision. The high door sills give greater protection against side impacts. The petrol tank is located under the rear seats. The vehicle, which has never been registered, is seen at the Heritage Motor Centre, Gaydon during the Alec Issigonis centenary day on 15th October 2006. (Photos: R. Porter)
